YTAA is organised by the Fundació Mies van der Rohe with the support of Creative Europe as an extension of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award. This year, YTAA has merged with the European Medal for the best diploma project and is organised in partnership with the Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE-CAE) and the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE); World Architects is a founding partner; the European Cultural Centre is a partner in Venice; and the award is sponsored by Jung and Jansen; with the support of USM.
The 12 finalist projects competing to win the YTAA 2018 have been announced today.
YTAA 2018 received 334 Graduation Projects submissions from 118 Schools from all over Europe as well as from China and Korea, which participated as guest countries this year.
The members of the YTAA 2018 Jury are:
Salomon Frausto, Director of Studies at the Berlage, Delft (Chairman);
Martina Bauer, Architect, Senior Associate at Barkow Leibinger, Berlin;
Ana Betancour, Researcher, Professor and Rector at UMA School of Architecture, Umeå;
Matilde Cassani, Architect on the border between architecture, installation and event design, Milan;
Rainer Mahlamäki, Architect Founder of Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects, Helsinki.
The jury based its decisions on the following criteria : quality of the topics, process of exploration, resolution, techniques used to represent the project as a whole, considering the aspects that could define excellence in each project such as originality, complexity, coherence, exploration and research, rigorousness and resolution, independent and critical thinking, study of emerging fields and engagement.
The jury highlighted the rigour of the research, the quality of the designs and the extraordinary skills used in the graphic presentations of the shortlisted works. It also drew special attention to the two graduation projects that have consisted in the construction of the designs, a model that could be more present in the forthcoming years.
85% of the projects that the jury shortlisted cope with topics in the author’s local environment and they all reveal the personality of each author and the way that each of them understands the aims of architecture.
Within the framework of the 16th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia, the “Young Talent Architecture Award. YTAA 2018” Exhibition will be inaugurated on May 24, 2018 at 16:00h, at the European Cultural Centre - Palazzo Mora as a Collateral Event.
The YTAA Awards Ceremony will take place on September 20, 2018 in Venice, together with a debate in which the theme of La Biennale di Venezia “Freespace”, the main topics of the “European Year of Cultural Heritage” organised by the European Commission and the YTAA works will be discussed by the YTAA winners, the jury members, the Future Architecture platform participants and other guests.
What is the Young Talent Architecture Award (YTAA)?
YTAA aims to support the talent of recently graduated Architects, Urban Planners and Landscape Architects who will be responsible for transforming our environment in the future. YTAA has emerged from curiosity about and interest in the initial stages in these students’ development and a desire to support their talent as they enter into the professional world.
YTAA brings together the most talented graduated architects and the best architecture firms. Schools were asked to nominate Graduation Projects through internal debates. YTAA winners have the chance to develop comprehensive strategies enhancing synergies and complementarities with architecture firms and institutions.
YTAA Winners are supported in the creation of a network with the architects and critics involved in the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award. To support its professional development, Europe’s youngest architecture talent is granted:
· a diploma 5.000€ each
· a profile in World-Architects.com · visibility through the YTAA 2018 exhibition
· USM furniture to design their work space
· Each Winner is asked to define a YTAA Plan of Action, which is prepared on reception of the Award, and to deliver a YTAA Final Report outlining the experience twelve months later
